Elected State and Local officials call on Federal Partners to Support USPS

Earlier today I submitted a formal letter to Senator Ben Cardin, Senator Chris Van Hollen, and Representative Dutch Ruppersberger regarding ongoing issues with the Parkville branch of the United States Postal Service. The letter, attached below, received bipartisan support and was signed by State Senator Kathy Klausmeier, Delegate Carl Jackson, Delegate Joe Boteler, Councilwoman Cathy Bevins, and Councilman David Marks.

In the letter, we call on our federal colleagues to investigate the ongoing issues regarding daily service in the Parkville area. Since the United States Postal Service is a federal entity, our federal colleagues are the ones best equipped to deal with this issue.

What has become apparent over the last few days, however, is that this is a widespread issue across the country. Reporting in the New York Times, Washington Post, Philadelphia Inquirer, and other major publications show that many of these issues stem from mismanagement of the United States Postal Service.

The newest appointee to Postmaster General has instituted sweeping cuts, knocking back overtime leading to unmanned routes when employees call out sick. This is a major issue for a number of reasons. There are reports of residents going without necessary medications, and small businesses falling behind because packages are not being shipped on time.

As we approach Election Day, it is absolutely imperative that we get a handle on this situation. Mail-in ballots will play a major role in this election as we continue to deal with the coronavirus pandemic. At this point, allowing the United States Postal Service to languish in its current state is tantamount to voter suppression. Our federal officials must take action now if these issues are going to be cleared up in a timely manner.

Here is the letter:
